April Planting Out

My broccoli and cauliflowers are bursting out of their pots so I thought I would take advantage of this mid April sun and put them in their final places.  I just put out half now and I will see how they get on. This year I am not taking chances with the pigeons and rooks.  I have built a 3 foot high wooden frame and covered my complete brassica bed with fine netting.  Hopefully it will keep out the white butterflies as well but I am not convinced! :)

Apr 20 - Broccoli, Cauliflower

  1. Broccoli - Wok Broc, planted out 3 plants
  2. Broccoli - Calabrese, planted out 2 plants
  3. Cauliflower - Romanesco Veronica, planted out 5 plants

April Outdoor Sowing

I am running out of space so I am cutting back a bit on potatoes this year.  I am sticking to new potatoes which are great for those impromptu summer dinners with a bit of rosemary and garlic.

March Outdoor Planting Out

I thought I would risk some indoor grown lettuces and plant them out in the ground.  I have used old, clear plastic bottles as make do cloches.

21st - Lettuces from 05th of March Indoor Sowings

  1. Lettuces - Mizuna 4 plants
  2. Lettuces - Valmaine 4 plants
  3. Lettuces - Romaine 4 plants
*Update - After returning on the 15th of Apr from holiday, all lettuces looked very healthy and had grown a great deal under their bottle cloches.

March Indoor Sowing - Never Enough Basil

I like to use Basil by the fistful so I thought I would get another round on the go.

20th - Basil

  1. Basil - Thai, 3 pots (Indoor Propagator)
  2. Basil - Sweet Genovese, 3 pots (Indoor Propagator)
  3. Chives - Garlic, 2 pots (Indoor Propagator)
* Update
Most of the basil has been very successful.  This year I have gone the extra step and potted on each small plant individually to try and get a lot of larger plants that can be used continually throughout the summer.

March Outdoor Sowing Diary Continued

Right before my 3 week holiday I managed to get a lot of seeds in.  This worked great as the hardest part is sitting around waiting for them to germinate.  I happily returned to little seedlings popping up everywhere!
